Great double for Starkey

NZPA London Greville Starkey completed a sensational Derby and Oaks double when he drove Fair Salinia past the French-trained favourite Dancing Maid (2 to 1) to a last stride victory in the 200th running of the fillies’ classic on Saturday. The Sydney-owned horse Sofala (14 to 1), ridden by Paul Cook, was prominent In the straight but could not match the acceleration of the leading horses and had to be content with sixth place. Trained by Michael Stoute, Fair Salinia (3 to 1) was four lengths behind Dancing Maid when the favourite set sail for the line at the 400 m.

But Starkey, riding a similar driving finish that won him the Derby on Shirley Heights, inched closer and closer to Dancing Maid to land the £45,000 prize by a short head. Suni, Yves Saint Martin’s mount, got ur> close to home to beat her stablemate Seraphima, ridden by Pat Eddery, for third place.
