Eventful steeples
PA Palmerston North Two riders were taken to Palmerston North Hospital after an eventful Melford Steeplechase at Awapuni on Saturday. J. McLeod suffered concussion, and P. A. Smith was bruised. Smith’s mount, Overkeen, fell at the second of the stand double with two rounds to go. Mateus (McLeod) was brought down at the same time.
Five other horses failed to complete the course. Rainbow City lost his rider at the next fence, as did Young John with 700 m to go. Vin Chento fell on the first circuit, and Gold Reign with 1200 m to run.
Aarvak nearly lost his rider at one stage and was eventually pulled up.
