England wins cricket

NZPA-Reuter London England beat Pakistan by 94 runs in the second of the one-day cricket internationals at the Oval on Saturday to win the two-match series and the Prudential Trophy. England’s victory was due partly to 21-year-old David Gower, who scored 114 not out, and partly to another inept batting display by the Pakistanis. Pakistan made 154 for the loss of eight wickets compared with the paltry 85 it scored in the first match, which it lost by 132 runs at Old Trafford.

But in some ways Pakistan batted even worse because it made no serious attempt to catch England’s 55over total of 248 for six. After Mudassar Nazar had taken 40 overs to score a ponderous 56, the game drifted drearily towards its inevitable close, enlivened only by a bright 44 from Wasim Raja when it was too late to make any difference.

Scores.— England 248/6 (D. Gower 114 not out, G. Roope 35, D. Lloyd 34; Mudassar 2/31) beat Pakistan 154/8 (Mudassar 56, Wasim Raja 44; B. Wood 2/14, Lloyd 1/3, Miller 2/24, C. Old 2/26).
