Effect of repeal
Sir, — Your headline, “What will happen to the Repeal petition?” (May 25) seems to suppose that the community is behind this effort. I assure you, Sir, it is not. The fate of this petition, with its impressive number of signatures, remains with the legislators and depends on how they view repealing a law which has not yet been given an honest chance to work. The complete honesty of the petition is questionable. Petition forms were placed in many public places, including public libraries, and I even heard of students enrolling for classes having petition forms thrust under their noses for them to sign along with their application forms. How many of those who signed the petition had read and understood the law they wished repealed? How many had signed twice or more times? How many were under 17? Will the signatures be checked for their bona fides? It seems to me to be very suspect indeed. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) L. V. McNEILL. May 25, 1978.
