Tauranga boys take volleyball

Taranga Boys’ College overcame some lapses of concentration to beat W’hakatane High School. 15-5. 15-9. 8-15. 16-14 in the final of the national secondary schools volleyball tournament at Cowles Stadium yesterday. Both teams were a little disappointing and the game never rose to any great heights except in the latter half of the fourth set when there Were several fine rallies and Whakatane came back from 3-11 down to lead briefly at 14-13.

Last year’s winner. Rongotai College, was eliminated in section play and could only finish in fifth place—the same position as its junior team which also won last year. The senior girls’ final was a rather more exciting affair and the match went into the fifth set when tension was at a very high level. Otumoetai College, the title holder, seemed in control at 11-2 but there was a dramatic rally by the Rotorua school. Western Heights, which finally took the lead and eventually just scraped home, 16-14.

Bay of Plenty sides were prominent in the tournament while the best local effort came from the Christchurch Girls’ High School senior girls team with a: creditable third placing. The recently appointed national director of coaching (Mr Ctirad Benacek) said that the standard was the highest in many years and it was the first time players had used the spike properly. At the conclusion of the tournament two New Zealand secondary school teams were announced for a possible tour of New Caledonia later this year. Senior boys.—B. Williams. M. Thomas. G Bidions. F.
