Group to put ‘Coast view’
A large crowd attended a public meeting in Greymouth yesterday organised by a new group, West Coast Futures, which was formed to counter “outside pressure groups” and to present what it calls a West Coast viewpoint on conservation issues.
The group is organising a petition to the Government asking that decisions on conservation proposals for West Coast land be delayed.
The petition asked that social and economic as well as nature - conservation factors be included in all assessments of land. The petition is based on
an assumption by the group that the West Coast may make further valuable contributions to the New Zealand economy, even though there already are heavy demands on its natural resources.
Yesterday’s meeting was chaired by the president of the group (Mr R. A. Ferguson) and was opened by the Mayor of Greymouth (Mr O. H. Jackson). Addresses were given by the Rev. R. J. Hamlin, on people, and Mr J. P. Kerr, on i land.
The chairman of the West Coast Regional Development Council (Mr D. J. Truman) summed up.
