Cup final big power drain
About 15,000 Christchurch households are estimated to have stayed up late to watch Ipswich beat Arsenal early yesterday morning. Television One screened the F.A. Cup final by satellite direct from Wembley, London, beginning at 2 am.
According to the Municipal Electricity Department, power demand in its area dropped about 12,000 kW between 3.45 a.m. and 4 a.m., half an hour after the match ended. That would have been
enough tn supply about 9000 homes, assuming that each was using lighting, * television set, and a heater.
As the M.E.D. supplies power to about two-thirds of the households in metropolitan Christchurch, it can be estimated that about 15,000 households were awake during the match.
Day-by-day comparison.s would not give a suitable indication of demand, said an M.E.D. spokesman. Sudden rises and falls were a much clearer sign of consumer activity.
