Chch Cathedral closed
Christchurch Cathedral was closed to the public last evening and will not open again for three months.
This will allow workmen to complete the restoration programme by renovating the Cathedral’s interior. Work will begin this week with the erection of scaffolding at either end of the nave, for electricians and cleaners.
According to the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. IM. L. Underhill), there have been very few periods in the Cathedral’s history when it has been closed. The only other times, he said, were when the tower became unsafe after earthquakes, and during the great influenza epidemic of 1918. During the three-month closing, normal Cathedral services will be held at St Luke’s Church, at the corner of Manchester Street and Kilmore Street.
