Ellesmere bowlers top
It was a pity that Ellesmere’s selector, Mr Pat Thomas, was not present to see his club-mates, Gil and Mavis Lancaster, win the Tenderkist Canterbury indoor bowls pairs final at Kearneys Road yesterday. Thomas made the comment that his players were short of match practice after the Town and Country fixture on Wednesday evening, but the Lancasters made mockery of the comment yesterday, beating Pat Humm and Ngaire Tomlinson (Spreydon), 15-11, in the final.
Play was even early in the
final. After two ends the score was 3-all and after five ends it was 6-all. Mrs Tomlinson took a small lead with singles on the next two ends. Mrs Lancaster scored a single on the eighth end but then Mrs Lancaster took a four-point lead, with a three.
The lead was short-lived, however. Mrs Lancaster scored a four to level and move ahead with a three and a single on the final two ends. A late burst of seven points still left Eric Tebay two points behind Mrs Tomlinson in their semi-final match, Mrs Tomlinson winning 11-9.
Mrs Lancaster scored well over the last few ends to beat Joyce Stewart in the other semi-final, 11-8.
Last year’s winner, Trevor Thompson, was a first-round casualty, beaten by Wally Welsh, 10-7. The sole New Zealand representative to qualify, Leon McLennan, also lost in the first round, to George Gasper, 11-2. From 295 entries, 100 qualified for post-section play.
