Motor-cyclists ' not fooled’
Motor-cyclists will not be fooled by the method the Government has used to raise the Accident Compensation Commission levy on motor-cycles, according to Mr R. Garbutt, one of the leaders of the mass protest in Christchurch against the levy rise. the Government allowed the A.C.C. recommendations to be publicised, remained quiet during the “expected” protests, and then responded to “responsible representations” by announcing a smaller increase, said Mr Garbutt.
“By introducing a scaled levy, the Government has inferred that balancing the books is more important than social justice,” he said. “The only method of applying a levy is to apply it equally to all, and this is the only answer which will be acceptable to motor-cyc-lists.” To add to all this, said Mr Garbutt, the Government had given no indication that training schools would be set up designed to reduce injuries suffered by motorcyclists.
