Tumbler breaks long drought
Special correspondent Wellington.
Tumbler won his first race in a year when successful in the Waterloo Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. Though he has run a couple of places, it has taken all that time for him to recover from first an abortive Australian trip and then a stone bruise. Tumbler is now seven and is one of a team trained at Taupo by Roger McGlade. a frequent and successful visitor to Trentham. The winning margin in the Waterloo was two lengths and a half over an outsider. Trajan. Chinkara was third. Skelton had Tumbler fifth to the 600 m. but pushed him along to be challenging hard for the lead on the turn. Tumbler kept going and eased right away to win well.
Tumbler w ill run in the Gloam ing Stakes on Saturday and then will probably go on a campaign
that includes Rotorua. Ellerslie and Trentham again in July. Trajan, carried back th ® turn, ran on well for his second, while Chinkara after being left in the early stages, ran on truly for third.
Greysun and Even Sen were next, but both were in trouble on the turn. Greysun was carried back by a tiring Venletgh and Even Son was tightened tor room a little later on.
Charger, the second favourite, was attempting to win his fourth Waterloo Handicap. At the end, ninth was the best he could manage. He raced midfield and three wide for much of the race and though a little closer on the turn, had nothing left when riaden out.
