Inter-island ferry service
Sir, — In “The Press” of October 14, 1972, there was an article under my name headed “Cook Strait ferries may kill Lyttelton service.” Labcfur has pledged to bring the Lyttelton ferry back but it was Labour which must accept the “credit” for implementing the Cook Strait rail ferry service and killing not only the coastal shipping trade, and small ports, besides contributing largely to the elimination of the Lyttelton service. Admittedly, National at first bit-
terly opposed the Cook Strait service but later jumped on the bandwaggem and further boosted it. Thus, both parties are to blame. Business people and young folk are so geared to air travel today that a Lyttelton service — attractive as it might seem — could be a white elephant. Many of us would like our ferry back for tradition alone — but not as a political football. — Yours, etc., JOHN LESLIE. May 4, 1978.
