Burnside given half-point women’s hockey margin

The grounds at Hospital Corner were better than they have been for some time when the senior women’s hockey competition continued on Saturday.

Carlton, appreciating the surfaces, beat the previous coleader, Harewood, 2-1. This leaves Burnside a clear leader by half a point. Burnside, which beat Digbys, 8-2, and Woolston-Rawhitl, which beat Linwood United, 7-1, share second place with Carlton. Harewood, by losing a point, has dropped to fourth place. The other game between Cranmer and University was deferred. Both sides have players in the New Zealand Universities team at present touring Australia. Results: Carlton 2, Harewood 1. Burnside 8, Digbys 2. Woolston-Rawhiti 7, Linwood United 1. Points:

CARLTON SCRAPE HOME In an even match, Harewood showed much improved team work. Playing with a tight defence, it took advantage of many misdirected passes from Carlton, which did not play with its usual precision.

Alison Sutherland opened the scoring for Harewood. After this, Carlton seemed to settle down

and went on attack with more determination. Carlton’s goal shooting let it down. Several shots went just outside the goal. Jenny Hamilton saved well in goal for Harewood, while Lynette Sutherland gave a much improved display as right-back. Henrietta Carroll was a thorn in Carlton’s side, breaking up many moves with good back tackling. Jill Cummings opened Carlton’s scoring with a hard shot. Play continued at a fast pace, with both sides striving for the winning goal before Shirley Haig scored for Carlton. HIGH SCORING

Superior teamwork in all sections gave Burnside a convincing win over Digbys. Burnside’s inside trio of Judith Phillips, Helen Denny, and Julia Allen, with combination and accurate shooting, scored the eight goals. Phillips made some fine runs with strong dribbling. Janet Galloway played another fine game as centre-half, feeding the forwards with well directed passes. Mary Clinton played soundly, supporting her forwards and covering well. Allen opened the scoring and Phillips scored three times for Burnside and Robyn Hunt once for Digbys to make the half-time" score 4-1.

In spite of the large score against it, Digbys never gave up and made some strong runs that could have resulted in goals with a little more finish. The rearranged forward line produced a better combination, with more punch in the centre. Phillips scored twice in the second half to give her five goals for the

match. Denny completed Burnside’s scoring with two goals. Hunt scored the second goal for Digbys. WOOLSTON TOO STRONG

Woolston gave another good display of teamwork. The forwards combined well and were supported by a good half line. The deep defence was not called on to do much work. Lois McCartney, who alwavs looked dangerous, hunted the ball with drive and was rewarded with three goals. Cath Butts toiled hard throughout the match and scored two goals. Judy Verdeilen scored with a powerful shot from a pass received from Butts.

Donna Paviell, Woolston’s centre-half, was always up with the play, putting her forwards on attack with well controlled passes. She also scored a fine goal by following in. The match was not one sided. Linwood played with determination. As Woolston mounted strong attacks, Linwood was gradually forced into a more defensive style of play.

Marian Fullwood In goal was again one of the mainstays, blocking and clearing well. Jill Davies gave strong support as left-back. Robyn Fergus' covered well and towards the end of the game was responsible on many occasions for clearing the ball from the circle. Leanne Summerton also toiled hard at centre-half. Susan Spivey scored Linwood’s onlygoal. Play became rather scrappy towards the end of the game.
