B.H.P. reaches yearly high

Australian sharemarkets appeared undecided about their direction yesterday and while B.H.P. closed equal to its yearly high, other industrials fell. Pancontinental attracted most attention in early trading and rose 60c to 1250 c, but eased to close at 1220 c. A special overseas sale of 2000 at 1200 c helped the stock.

Queensland Mines gained 2c to 220 c, while Kathleen Investments closed at a steady 167 c. Brokers said the recent reports that agreement will be reached to enable one of the new uranium projects to begin soon, and the Iranian Uranium Mission now in Australia had maintained interest. C.R.A., after losing out on its attempt to gain control of Coal and Allied fell 7c after the annual meeting heard a forecast of hard times ahead. Lower profits saw M.I.M. fall 3c to 196 c, while Robe River lost 2c on the fall in iron ore exports in the last quarter. B.H.P. rose 4c to close at 664 c after falling to 654 c in early trading. Banking stocks were mixed. Coal and Allied gained 5c to 355 c while Howard Smith, which now owns 50 per cent of C.A.1.L., was up 5c to 365 c.
