Orari race now worth $10,000
The fifth contest for the South Island Thoroughbred Stakes this year will be worth $lO,OOO. The Geraldine Racing Club’s popular spring attraction, a 1400 m weight-for-age event for females, will carry a $5OOO subsidy from the New Zealand Racing Authority. The winner’s share of the $lO,OOO stake will be $6400. Besides there will be trophies and awards, including a free service to the
Strathconan Stud's imported stallion, Insolvent. The first running of th« South Island Thoroughbred Stakes was memorable foi the victory of the greal Show Gate.
Canterbury-trained marei and fillies have not managed to break the southern grip on the race.
Lynda Mary, from South, land, won in 1975 and 1977, and the 1976 winner was the Wingatui-trained Clarendon Gold.
