Super lotteries
Sir, — The rapid growth of $lO lotteries conducted by the Golden Kiwi organisers should be carefully examined. The facts are at variance with Ministerial statements, particularly that such lotteries, drawing heavily on housekeeping money in times of despair, would be “infrequent”. It was denied that the last big lottery was sold out immediately, yet many vendors could not supply even pre-orders by regular clients. Although you report early local sell-outs this time, “The Press” today still carries a costly advertisement, claiming "all profits to charities”. Apart from the policy of handing out lottery profits to sports and other non-charitable bodies, there are huge profits in advertising, with probable large commissions to advertising agents. The 14 per cent debited to "administration” of the jackpot lotteries should be considerably reduced for the big one with 10 times the subscription for about the same effort. — Yours etc.,
VARIAN J. WILSON May 2, 1978.
