Jail “not a solution”
Sir, —- It is interesting to note that the chairman of the penal reform group, Crimanon, used prison relics for the laundering of his new book on prison reform. Good publicity gimmickry. It appears Mr Harris wants to abolish jails. Presumably, he will soon be compiling a list of kindly citizens prepared to take convicted murderers, muggers, rapists, mindless vandals and the like into their comfortable homes for “re-education and rehabilitation”. I wonder how many of these people sincerely advocating such penal reform have been on the receiving end from society’s renegades? I can well imagine the reaction of the Miramar Golf Club’s caterer who was viciously attacked last week-end. And what of the feelings of parents of little girls who, in recent months, have been savagely attacked and slain? These do-gooders appear to suffer mental blocks concerning the innocent victims. — Yours, etc., HARVEY FOSS. May 2, 1978.
