Cross-country to Australian
PA Auckland Robert de Castella (Australia) using the downhill sections of the tough 6000 m course to advantage. fought back to win the final of the national television cross-country series at Tank Farm, Northcote, yesterday. On the last of the six laps De Castella passed Dan O’Connell (Wellington) to win in 24min Usee. O’Connell led strongly in the early stages, with Euan Robertson (Otago) and Dave Fitzsimmons (Australia) close behind. In the next three laps De Castella built up a commanding lead before O’Connell, with perfect hurdling technique, started to peg him back.
In the fifth lap O’Connell swept into the lead and, with 1000 m to go. looked set to win. De Castella and O’Connell were well clear
of Fitzsimmons, wha was third in 24min 29sec. Robertson faded in the final stages to finish eighth in 25mln Bsec.
Heather Carmichael proved too strong in the final 1000 m of the women’s 3500 m event, winning in 14min 16sec from Barbara Moore and Mary O’Connor (Christchurch). Results:
