Golf title to Bruce Taylor
Bruce Taylor continued his preparation for the New Zealand j amateur golf championships at f Hastings in nine days time with i a comfortable three-stroke vic- t lory in the Coringa open on Sat- t urday. « At his two previous appearances at Coringa this season, i Taylor had been runner-up. Me t was second to Geoff Clarke in ( the South Island championship ( and runner-up with his Russley t team-mate, James Angus, in the Canterbury foursomes recently. j However, the Canterbury s match-play champion was in con- t trol for most of the 36 holes on * Saturday. He set the morning t pace with a round of 75 which , was notable for birdies on the | two opening holes and a brace at the finish. In between there was an out of bounds. At half-way, Taylor held a twostroke lead over two Canterbury representatives. Murray Brown . and John Williamson, with Co- 1 ringa’s top player, Stephen Street, two strokes behind that 1 pair. 1
Although the course was in I good order, all senior players found it hard to score well playing off.the back tees and having to battle against a keen wind that increased in strength in the afternoon. Street finished best in the afternoon with 76 after a mixture of birdies and one-oxer pars, but Taylor, alter a sound effort, was only one shot worse off and won the title decisively. Brown and Williamson had identical scores of 77 and 79 to share third place, one stroke behind Street. Nick Meh or, a student from Hastings who is playing at Coringa at present, was one of three players in fifth place on 160. Leading senior scores were:— 152 — B. C. Taylor, 75, 77'. 155 — S. W. Street. 79, 76. 156 — M. G. Brown, 77, 79; J. N. Willaimson. 77. 79. 160 — N. Mclvor, 82, 78; B. G. Paterson, 80, 80; M. E. Street. 81, 79.
