Canty too good for Southland
The Canterbury A.S. Paterson Trophy indoor bowls team, even without its five New Zealand representatives, proved to be far too good for Southland in the first defence of the trophy at Kearneys Road on Saturday. The final score was 222-181. Before the games began, the president of the Canterbury Indoor Bowls Association, Mr Gerald Adam, asked the players to stand in silence in memory of Mr A. Boyce. Mr Boyce, who was an enthusiastic member of the Linwood Intermediate club, was killed on Friday evening. Two of the first round pairs games had but one point between each team, and a third was drawn. But Lloyd Bellis won his game comfortably for Canterbury. • The performance of the home team in the singles, however was outstanding. Canterbury won 5A games to 2J in the singles, and then went on to take the two fours matches. All the second round pairs games went to the Canterbury players, but Southland staged a revival in the singles. Only Marie Watson, Bruce Gray, and Barry Weir could manage wins for the home team as Southland captured five victories. Southland could not continue the fine form, though, and Canterbury was untroubled to
win the remaining fours games to seal a fine victory. The same Canterbury team has been retained for the Otago challenge on May 20. Results (Canterbury names first): Pairs First round. — K.
