Faulty flue causes cottage fire
Fire destroyed a holiday cottage at Blandswood, Peel Forest, yesterday. The cause was said to be the faulty installation of a heater flue. The cottage was owned by Mr E. R. Tarbotton, of 116 Middle Road, Ashburton. The Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Peel Forest fire unit were called to the fire. Timaru’s senior fire
safety officer (Mr A. Chapman) said last evening that many fires in New Zealand were caused because a sufficient outlet was not allowed at the top for hot air to escape from a ventilation pipe surrounding the flue In this case, he said, the ventilation pipe was sealed. “It heated like an oven, and set the ceiling woodwork on fire.”
