Welfare swindle discovered

PA Auckland Auckland detectives are trying to find the source of a batch of Social Welfare Department forms used in a $4500 sickness benefit swindle. The forms, made out in the name of a Social Welfare Department official, were passed off as warrants for sickness benefits at 38 Auckland post offices on April 6. Detective Inspector M. C. Charles, of the Auckland

C. 1.8., said yesterday that at first glance the orders appeared to be genuine. But they were either reproductions or blank benefit orders which had fallen into the wrong hands. He said inquiries were still being made to determine if any of the documents were produced by the Government Printer or any other publisher. From descriptions given by Post Office staff it appeared that a group of men cashed the forms.
