First family centre
PA Auckland Auckland Maori leaders are taking positive moves to deal with the drinking problems faced by some of their people. The Auckland police met Black Power gang members last week to try to reduce hotel violence, and plans are in hand to establish what are called "family centres.”
"The idea is to take the drink out of drinking,” said Mr R. P. Rikys, chairman of the Auckland Orakei Marae and Education Centre.
“We want to make it an incidental part of a wider i event. You do not go there |to drink. You go there to play pool, be entertained, help your kids with homework, and, incidentally, have a drink with your wife.” The first family centre will open next month at a former Symonds Street cinema.
