Repairs at Pukaki
The diversion culvert under the Pukaki high dam, which was damaged during heavy rain at Easter, may be back in use by May . 8. A 60-tonne energy dissipation block at the end of the culvert was uprooted by the force of water from Lake Pukaki passing through the culvert. Ministry of Works staff poured a new block which is now curing. Lake Pukaki has reached its highest level to date, 511.65 m above sea-level. Im higher than the previous maximum.
The lake has been allowed to rise steadily and no water ■ has been drawn off. However, the Electricity Department expects to have to draw off water to maintain lake levels further down the Waitaki River system.
