Disabled drivers
About 25 per cent of disabled drivers suffer from arthritis, according to a survey of persons applvirg for mobility cards from the Crippled Children Society. In some areas, half of the card-holders were arthritis sufferers, the survey showed. Mobility cards were first issued in September last year to assist disabled persons needing a car for transport. There are now 2500 cardholders.
Under the scheme, parking concessions are granted by local authorities. Anybody with limited walking ability may apply for a card.
