Father, son in winning four
The father-and-son combination of Norman (skip) and Blair (lead) Hocking had a fitting success in their own club’s indoor bowls tournament when the Linwood Avenue 50/50 was held yesterday.
Also in the four that beat Jack Burrows, 10-8, was Laurie Timlin and Stewart White. Burrows had his wife. Noeline, playing .third and Stan and Dorrie Fridd as lead and second. The eventual loser started well, with singles on the first two ends, and was still ahead, 3-1, after four ends. However, Hocking took over the lead with twos on both the fifth and the sixth to make the score 5-3. Although Burrows managed a fourth single on the seventh, Hocking drew away with a three and a single to lead, 9-4, with three ends to play.
A two to Burrows was followed by a well drawn single to Hocking and Burrows’ two on the final end still left him two points in arrears.
Burrows reached the final after two hard fought games against Maurice Penfold (1110) and Alf Williamson (65), the latter in the semifinal.
Hocking had to come from 0-7 down to beat Maurice Berkeley, 11-7. His semi-final
was a much easier affair and he beat Bob Ludbrook, 11-3. Results: Third round: J. A. Burrows 11, M. Penfold 10; N. Hocking 11, M. Berkeley 7; A. Williamson 7, D. Higham 4; R. Ludbrook 10, D. Watts 6. Semi-finals: Hocking 11, Ludbrook 3; Burrows 6, Williamson 5. Final: B. Hocking, L. Timlin, S. White, N. Hocking 10; S. Fridd, D. Fridd, N. Burrows, J. Burrows 8.
