Weather helps sale
It was umbrellas galore at the auction rooms of George Anderson and Son. Ltd, and with a wet afternoon the auctioneers had little trouble selling them. The umbrellas were just some of the several hundred articles that had been left on the Christchurch Transport Board's buses during last year and were being offered at auction. Bidding was brisk among the large crowd that attended and the highest price — $53 — was paid for a carton of assorted umbrellas. Most of the articles, including shoes, bags, clothing, books, toys, sunglasses, wallets and gloves, were offered in cartons so buyers had little opportunity to see what they were buying. However, this did not prevent most of the property from being snapped up. Umbrellas brought about $3 each and cartons of assorted clothing sold for as little as 51.50. An electric drill was bought for 53.50 and a lot of nine raincoats and parkas sold for S2B.
