Women to ride against men

NZPA Sydney The Australian Jockey Club announced on Tuesday that it would allow women to become apprentice jockeys and ride against men. The A.J.C. racing manager, Mr Ray Alexander, said the club was geared to admit women as apprentices. “We don’t want to get into any legal argument,” Mr Alexander said. “We know the day is not far off when women will ride in races against men.’’ Mr Alexander said there would be a period of phasing in. The move follows a lengthy conference between the A.J.C. and the New' South Wales Equal Opportunitv Commissioner, Mr Geoff Cahill, who was following complaints from women that they were not allowed the same opportunities as men to ride in races. The A.J.C. expects women will be able to become apprentices i within the next year.
