Only 16 mm of rain fell at the Botanic Gardens in i March, compared with the i March ..veragi of 54mm, • and the three days when Christchurch did have ’ light rain did little to re- i ieve the severe drought, ; according to the Met- | eorological Office at | Christchurch. The monthly total of ' 225 hours of sunshine was I 56 hours more than the I normal, and the highest ; since 1945. There were i only three sunless days, and at the end of March Christchurch had had 696 hours of sunshine this year compared with the average of 566 hours. Both air and soil temperatures were well above the March normal. The mean temperature for the 1 month was more than 1 deg warmer than the average of 15 deg. at Christ ’ church Airport and 14.6 deg, at the Botanic Gat j dens. Earth temperatures j at a depth of 30cm were ; nearly 2 deg. higher than ■’ the normal 16.5 deg.
