Liverpool to meet Bruges
|NZPA-Reuter London The Belgian champion. Bruges, will face Liverpool 1 in the final of the European Cup, a re-run of the UEFA Cup final of two years ago, won by the Englishmen. Liverpool coasted through its second-leg semi-final iwith Borussia Moenchenglladbach on Wednesday night after an early Ray Kennedy 'goal had rubbed out the i West Germans' slender lead [from the first match.
So Liverpool will defend in its own country on May 10 the crown it gained in Rome nearly a year ago when Borussia was its victim.
Elsewhere, semi-finals in i all three European club competitions produced close shaves and high drama. Bruges, for instance, knocked out the elite Italian club. Juventus, with a goal by Rene Vandereycken four minutes from the end of extra time. Some 113 minutes earlier, Alfons Bastijns had cancelled out the lead the visitors had brought from the Turin leg.
The Italians were never subdued but when the defender, Claudio Gentile, one of their cluster of internationals, was ordered off in extra time, they faltered. A second Belgian team, Anderlecht, won a place, for the third year running, in the final of the Cupwinners' But while the Dutch World Cup stars, Arie Haan and Rob Sensenbrink, from the penalty spot, stretched their aggregate over Twente Enschede to 3-0, Austria Wien qualified only after a nailbiting penalty competition. The 70,000-strong Viennese crowd had to wait until the second half for the two goals which overtook the 2-1 away leg lead of their visitor, Dimano Moscow. But the elated fans fell silent when a last-minute goal for the Russians made the score 2-1 and three-all on aggre-
gate. Extra time failed to break the stalemate and only the fifth penalty, slotted home by Martinez, dashed the Russians’ hopes. I In the UEFA Cup, the I Corsicans of Bastia beat I Grasshoppers Zurich, 1-0, land edged the Swiss out on the away-goal rule. Claude iPapi’s goal came with 23 minutes left. I Bastia will meet in the (two-leg final PSV Eindhoven I the Dutch champion. ; PSV foiled Barcelona’s bold attempt to pull hack | the 3-0 deficit with which it emerged from the away leg. ! The 80',000-strong Spanish I crowd — biggest of the I night — soon saw Carlos 'Rexach score from the penalty spot after the skipper, Johan Cruyff, had been fouled. A goal by Fortes imade it 2-0 within 18 minlutes but the Welsh recruit, Nick Deacy, coming on as a s e c o n d-half substitute, scored for PSV.
Cruyff, playing superbly in what seems sure to be his last European match, earned a second penalty midway through the second half and Rexach again tucked it away but the Dutch defence stood firm to the end.
