No clue to arsonist
Christchurch detectives were yesterday no closer to finding the arsonist who started a $300,000 fire in Manchester Street on Saturday evening. “The case is being treated very seriously, but there have been no further developments,” said Detective Inspector R. G. McMeeking, of the Christchurch C. 1.8. He said the police believed that the fire had been started by burglars. The block of commercial premises at 37 Manchester Street was extensively damaged by fire after several electric heaters were switched on and turned face down on carpets. Parts of the old two-stor-eyed building which suffered the most damage were the warehouse of Allan Brooker, Ltd, toy and stationery wholesalers, the premises of Direct Furniture, Ltd, and. the offices of several sports! organisations.
