The yarding of 618 was much larger than In recent weeks, and it came at a time when the Christchurch abattoir still has a lot of cattle still on hand. i In general, the market eased to the closing rates of last week, which put it on a par with a fortnight ago. Compared with the best rates I of last week, both steers and heifers were $lO to $l2 easier, and !in some cases considerably more. Cows also had an easier sale, $8 I to $lO back. ’ With the numbers on hand, the market was inclined to vary. It opened weakly, under more .limited competition, but duly imI proved several dollars. However, lit eased as selling progressed, :only to firm again in the last : race. At this stage some of the ! light-weights had a good sale. This week’s yarding again inj eluded a lot of heifers, and there were several consignments .from the West Coast. Steer beef sold at 54c to 56c,

Stevenson (Oxford). 3 at $9B: F. D. Richards (Windwhistle), 13 at $9O to $122; Vealers Veal sold on a buyers’ market. The yarding of 168 was probably more than adequate in the circumstances. Compared with last sale the market was $6 to $7 a head easier. On estimated dressed weight much of the veal was selling at 46c to 50c per kg. Heavy vealers sold at $BO to $9O a head, with medium at $65 to $75, and light down to $5O. Some very good quality calves were sold at $66, but few of the remainder at more than $5O. Fat pigs Fat pigs again met a rather weak sale. The yarding was larger than usual, consisting of a lot of light to medium porkers, which are in over supply. Quality was often poor, many pens being inclined to overfatness. Good quality baconers sold at rates similar to those of last week. This class of pig is meeting the best of the demand. Another very large yarding of choppers was forward. The goodcutting choppers' still met good competition at $4O to $5O, but the very light choppers had very limited Inquiry. Values:— Light porkers, $35 to $3B. Heavy porkers, $39 to $44. Light and medium baconers, $45 to $5O. Heavy baconers, $5l to $57, with odd sales to $6l. Choppers, good, $45 to $55. Average choppers, $3O to $42. Stove pigs There was a good yarding of store pigs, and in the absence of several local fatteners the market was the weakest since Christmas. Only the best pens of weaners fetched more than $lO, and only odd pens of stores more than $25. Compared with last sale, the market was a further $3 to $4 easier. Breeding stock again met very limited inquiry. Values:— Small weaners, $3 to $6. Good weaners, $7 to $10.50. Slips, $ll to $l7. Small stores, $lB to $2l. Large stores, to $27, with odd sales to $30.75.
