The neutron bomb
Sir, — Behind President Carter’s vacillation on whether to begin production of the neutron bomb lie those baneful influences having a vested interest in the bomb’s manufacture and the delusion suffered by those of President Carter’s advisers who believe that the neutron bomb is a bargaining counter to gain military concessions from the Soviet Union. President Brezhnev’s declaration that should the United States manufacture and deploy the neutron bomb in Western Europe, the Soviet Union will be obliged to equip the Warsaw Pact armies with it too, nullifies in advance any advantage that President Carter hopes to gain. The danger of escalating the nuclear arms race
in Europe is emphasised by the Peking Government’s urging on President Carter the manufacture of the bomb. The first step in realising Peking’s ambitions of global hegemony rests on fomenting war between N.A.T.O. and the Warsaw Pact blocs, which deployment of the neutron bomb immensely enhances. — Yours, etc., M.
