Supporters may get Mr Downie to stand
PA Auckland Th member of Parliament for Pakuranga (Mr G. P. A. Downie) Is expected to announce in about three weeks his intention to try' to retain the seat as an Independent at the General Election this year. Mr Downie, whose 7016 majority is one of the largest in the House, resigned from the National Party last month, a month after the party’s rules committee confirmed the selection of Mr T. de V. Hunt as National candidate for the election. Mr Dowmie had been reluctant to- commit himself
on his election intentions bpt after 60 supporters asked him on Saturday to stand as an Independent, he said: “I cannot say yes right now, as 1 want to be sure of the degree of support 1 have. “I know already there is substantial support for nte, but 1 want to take another two or three weeks to sort a few matters out.” Mr Downie agreed he leaned towards contesting the seat as an Independent. He hinted he would make the announcement at a public meeting in about three weeks, when he would also make a strong statement about the situation in Pakuranga.
