Zoo's lions will still have fun
PA Auckland [ Auckland Zoo’s lions ■ will be born free no more, i The lions and the zoo's j other cats, will be subject I to a birth control pro- ( gramme. Starting with the pumas, the female felines at the zoo will have hormones implanted under the skin. This has been tried successful overseas, but it will be the first time for I New Zealand zoos. The
effect will be to allow the animals to mate, but not to reproduce. The zoo’s director (Mr O. Wood) said that the zoo could no longer find homes for extra cats born there. Too many were being bom, he said, and contraception was preferable to separating the cats. "Separation would lead to abnormal behaviour, and quite frankly take some of the fun out of life for the animals."
