Hagley I almost pulled off a rear upset in the second round or the A grade inter-ciub badminton championship at the Saeilerup Hall on Saturday. Although it was not expected to extenu the highly-rated North Beach 1 combination. Hagley Sought hard to share the matches tour-all. betore losing ou countback, 185-189. North Beach, leader of the competition after a crushing first round wiu over Canterbury H, may have taken Hagley a little lightly, especially when both Peter Whiting and David Ross won the men's singles. Whiting was the comfortable; Winner over Brian Williams, but Charles Wasley, in his first season with Hagley after a J switch of allegiance from Canterbury. took Ross to three sets Misses Jenny Hood and Karen Burn reversed the men's result with good wins, and the doubles were shared also. Railway, joint favourite for the title with North Beach, was in commanding form, and won all eight games against a luckless University. Geoff Miller, arguably the best player In the grade, dropped the first set to the University num her one Chong Chon Jin, be fore rallying to win the next two. Chong could not repeat his success of the opening set, but said later that he was “happy to take a set off Geoff at all.” Knox continued its good form Of the previous round, disposing of Canterbury IT. 7-1. Warren Edgecumbe in particular was in good form, and did not drop a Bet. In the remaining match. Hagley II dropned two games to Canterbury I before eventuallv winning, 6-2.
