Christchurch detectives are still investigating the fire which gutted a classroom block at the St Albans school early yesterday morning. It was being treated as suspicious, hut had not yet been confirmed as arson, a police spokesman said.
F i r e-safety officers spent yesterday trying to determine the cause of the blaze, which broke out in an old classroom block soon after midnight. Firemen quickly brought the blaze under control, but not before it ha I destroyed two classrooms and
all the school equipment they contained. Fifty six-year-old pupils had a day off school yesterday because of the fire. They will be housed in other classrooms from Monday on. The cost of the damage caused was not known last evening.
