Hampton manager

Brett Hibbert has enjoyed a little banter now and then with his Shirley tennis clubmate and doubles partner, Peter Hampton, but he will have to jump to Hampton’s commands when the pair go to Copenhagen in July. This is because Hampton, at the tender age of 21, has been named manager of the New Zealand under-21 boys’ team, of which Hibbert is a member. The other members of the side, which will take part in the annual Galea Cup competition, are Malcolm Elley, and Paul Smith, both of Wellington. The appointment of a player as manager is not new in tennis, as the New Zealand association has used a prominent Auckland senior, Peter Langsford, in this capacity with national boys’ and girls’ teams in Europe. Hampton will be on the Continental circuits at the time of the Galea Cup event, . and this has prompted the national body to press him into service.
