Illegal yacht in front

NZPA-Reuter Portsmouth The Frenchman, Eric Tabarly’s, disqualified Pen Duick VI is leading the round-the-world yacht race in the dash to the finish, the organisers said yesterday. Tabarly was disqualified because of his boat’s revolutionary uranium keel and is officially not in the race.

He is 3220 km from Rio de Janeiro, where the fourth leg began on February 22, and is 5635 km from Portsmouth, the finishing point. About 190 km behind him, Great Britain II and another British boat, Heath’s Condor, are battling neck-and-neck. But because of the handicap system, they have little

chance of winning the race. The over-all leader on handicap, the Dutch yacht, Flyer, is lying geographically fourth, about 130 km behind the British boats. All 15 yachts are now north of the equator, the organisers said. The leaders are expected home on March 22.
