Experiment sought in Bangor St
Nine housing units may be built in Bangor Street, in the Avon Loop near Fitzgerald Avenue, as a “minireclamation” urban renewal experiment by the Christchurch City Council. However, the project requires town-planning approval because buildings would not be the normal distance back from the street. Instead. Bangor Street would be narrowed along part of its length, trees and landscaping taking up the area formerly used as street. A council architect yesterday told the housing and property committee—which approved a bid for a conditional use permit—that the council hoped the renewal housing would act as a catalyst for future private development in the neighbourhood. Avon Loop residents will b able to view plans for the housing at a special public meeting on March 22.
