Sisters Overseas Service

Sir, — In a recent article concerning Christchurch schoolgirls having abortions in Australia, it was stated that Youthline referred girls to S.O.S. I wish to clarify here that Youthline is primarily a telephone counselling organisation. We help our clients with their problems by listening empathetically. We do not give advice or answers to problems, but try to encourage our clients to find their own answers. We may suggest alternatives, but our service is built around letting clients take responsibility for any decisions. Youthliners are aware that their own personal values must not impinge cm the clients’ ability to make their own decision. If a client chooses abortion, we then refer her to a general practitioner or to an organisation such as S.O.S. when they feel incapable of surmounting abortion obstacles in New Zealand due to present legislation. However, if a client were to choose some other action, such as adoption or keeping the child, we give them support and refer them to appropriate organisations. — Yours, etc., ANN-MARIE FAIRWEATHER, Youthline. March 4, 1978. [This correspondence is now closed. — Editor]
