Suburban cricket

Many positions on the Christchurch Suburban Cricket Associ-i ation's senior competition table could alter as the result of the penultimate round, which began on Saturday. Three of the teams at the bottom of the ladder facing possible relegation gave improved performances. The final round will be played on March 18 and 19 when team composition will be altered; first, because the association will be defending the Minor Sub-Association Cup against Ashburton on those dates and, second, because of the demands of winter sports codes for trials and pre-season matches. At Sumner, the home side, enjoying a 20-point lead in the competition was put into bat by Belfast on a pitch which had a bounce difficult to “read.” Ray Steele top-scored with 58 while Tony McKendry, Lee Brown, and Alan Hounseli all reached the 20s. Terry Cockburn. Trevor Issitt, and Russell Rudkin all took three wickets for Belfast. A very solid, undefeated opening partnership of 109 between Peter Steere (48 not out) and Brent Pearce (45 not out) then saw Belfast finally realise the potential that had been there all season. Like Belfast, Harewood occcupies a low position on the ladder. In fact, only three points separate the bottom four teams. Waltham is also in that category and Ha re wood was somewhat surprised and relieved when put into bat on Saturday. Harewood was able to declare at 254 for six after a brilliant, unbeaten century by Reg Hughes, who excelled with off-side shots and hit 15 boundaries. Other good scores were by Murray Scott (31). Alan Harrison (55), and Frank Overend (35). with Graham Reid (two for 72) and Mike Eddington (three for 83) the best of Waltham's bowlers. Waltham was 29 without loss. The bottom team, Hoon Hay W.M.C.. batted first at Garrick Park against Woolston W.M.C. and declared at 252 for nine, with good scores by John Neilson ■57) and lan Kirkman (32). But a lot of credit for the total had to go to the young Paul Grupelar, aged 16, who top-scored with 62. and to Dennis who made 44 not out. Ken Taylor was the top wickettaker for Woolston, with three for 60, while Norman Sloan, Paul Muri, and Murray Campbell all took two wickets. Woolston, i

- seven for one at stumps, had lost -I the valuable wicket of Sloan. i ! i At Denton Park, Hornby won j I the toss and after putting Merii. vale-Papanui into bat had the op-j position all out for 146, the cap-1 . tain Nick Ebert the only batsi men to reach 20. ' Robert Wilson made good use i I of the time he had available be-| j fore a wedding by taking six for J 41 off 20 overs. Hornby made a ' useful start to its innings and > was 53 for one at stumps, with > David Hassett still there on 20. SENIOR A Harewood 254/6 dec. (R. Hughes L> 100 not out, A. Harrison 55, F.
