A balance of co-operation

Sir, — David Bigelow’s remarks (March 1) deserve support. President Sadat’s initiative and Mr Begin’s response constitute a modern miracle. Perhaps the scales are weighted against them, but even if they fail, the fact that they have been meeting, talking and negotiating instead of fighting is an encouragement to all. Christians and Christian nations would do well to emulate them. In a sense Muslim and Jew are exemplifying Christ’s injunction that we should love our enemies. This is rarely followed. Such love is neither soft nor sentimental, it is tough and can be demanding. It aims to bring out the best even in the worst and, by expressing great expectations. helps to achieve their fulfilment. Government actions and statements about the Russians and the Japanese are an illustration of the opposite tendency to which we humans are terribly prone. They are counter-pro-ductive, increase enmity and may lead to disaster. Efforts at co-operation and friendship in every possible direction are an urgent necessity. — Yours, etc., A. C. BARRINGTON. March 1 ,1978.
