Constables attacked
Two young constables were attacked, one of them being left semi-conscious, by a group of men in Karangahape Road on Wednesday evening. Constable S. P. Smith, aged 19, was taken to the I Auckland Hospital suffering ifrom concussion and extensive bruising. He and Constable C. D. Graveson, aged 20, were discharged from hospital morning. Both were cut and grazed in the attack.
While on patrol they had stopped near the Star Hotel about 10.20 p.m. to speak to the driver of a car when a group from the car confronted them. Constable Smith was held by one man while another beat him on the head. He was left semi-conscious in a car-park opposite the hotel. A man appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of aggravated assault and another man on a charge of assault on a policeman.
