Riccarton I draw level
After leading the A grade Inter-club table tennis competition since the fifth round. Avonside LI. lost to its closest rival, Riccarton L in the 12th round of matches at the Selwyn Street ha>l. Die two teams are now level at the top of the points table with 22 points each with two rounds remaining. Riccarton built up a handy lead early on. winning the first three singles matches. Alastair Armstrong having a good win over Richard Dixon in three games. Stuart Armstrong having a good battle with the durable Bert Thompson and the South Island champion. Yee Chow Boi, beating the promising John Richards in straight games. From that point on. a Riccarton win seemed probable. Dixon finished the night with three >»<ses. although his match with Stuart Armstrong was a good one. Trailing 10-15 and later 14-7, D'xon almost managed to overcome the powerful top spin game o Armstrong in the third game but left his run a little late. Both Richards and Thompson had wins over Alastair Armstrong in straight games and indeed, Avonside won ail three doubles matches. Dallington picked up its first two points since the fifth round when it accounted for Riccarton HI. 9-3. Peter Whittaker and Graham Condliffe won their three matches and the veteran campaigner, George Hart, took both Colin Tipper and Alan Campbell to three games before su.-i umbing Xvonside I beat Riccarton 11 but Graham Lamb and Guy Halliburton emerged from the de feat with creditable wins over Les Steu art. The youngsters. Martin Kelly and Stephen Dixon, had successful nights for Avonside I. winning ail their matches. Linwood narrowly defeated
Avonside Hi, 14 games to 13. Ling Nan Ming won his three matches, as usual, which was just as well, for his team mates, Tony Green and Michael Prisk could win just one singles match collectively. Prisk’s win may have been an important one; lie ! beat Brian Wilson in three games which enabled Linwood to close to within one match of Avonside with the final doubles to j come.
