Fair Pay ton horse
The W. D. and H. O. Wills! South Island show-jumping championship grand prix produced a popular win for Fair Pay, ridden by Jane Neave! (Kurow). Thirteen A-grade horses | started in this premier event at the South Island horse-of-the-year show at Waimate last week-end. In spite of the hard ground because of drought in the area, the overall jumping showed an improvement on the earlier 1 Fair Pay and Fiona < Skevington’s Persian Shah 1 (Otago) produced the only! faultless rounds in the first; round of the two-round contest, both horses having lives | ar different fences. Five i collected four faults, includ-( ing Kathy Taylor’s Imitation j (South Canterbury), which' had been up-graded earlier i in the day. Fortunes changed in the j second round, with lan Bell! on Vigilante (Rakaia) pro-1 ducing the only clear round.! but his first-round total of 151 faults kept him down to! sixth place. Fair Pav dropped • a rail for four faults, which i left the competition wide! open. Persian Shah dropped out I when he baulked and crashed 1 his rider into a fence. A pluckv recovery from Mrs; Skevmgton. who remounted to finish the round gave her! an over-all total of 27 faults., Imitation, the last to go, jumped a good round except for an error at the water I which placed him equal second on eight faults with David Letham’s Anzac (Ashburton). June Cresswell’s Freddy (Christchurch), and John Costello’s Salvador (Hawarden). A new class, the South
Island junior show-jumping I championship, produced an | exciting jump-off against the( clock between Persian Shah! and Imitation. Both horses! again jumped clear, with the! more experienced Persian 1 Shah winning by 0.15. The placed horses will now! compete in the grand final 1 for the "Big Red” trophy and I the title of junior show- i jumping rider of the year at the national show at Hastings! next month. Naireena, ridden by Trevor I Collins (Southland), was un-| doubtedly the star pony! jumper of the show winning! three classes, including the; South Island pony-of-the-1 year title. In this class, she! jumped three clear rounds to; win from Trevor’s second! pony, Nina. and Susan! Winder’s Red Pepper II (Canterbury). It was unfortunate for the A-grade and B-grade pony riders that their two classes for the day were held in two different rings, and clashed. Don Collins, riding Glenmorven (Canterbury), scooped the pool in the dressage classes, winning the three main competitions. Results:— Dressage.—Preliminary: D. Nelson’s Sandalwood 1, K.
