Regional planning appointment

Sir, — Several points in Heather Sinclairs letter of February 21 on regional planning on the West Coast need answering. The quality of research produced by the worker in question is of the highest calibre. Her reports are excellent, providing a valuable and perceptive insight into life-styles and communities. The quality or thoroughness of such work is not necessarily a function of hours put into the project. If a five-year university course and a Diploma of Town Planning were all that were needed, it makes one wonder why one of the many similarly qualified M.W.D. planning staff were not used. There is little advantage to be gained from being a “local”; more important qualities are needed. Being a “local” may bring in bias and possible division among the client local authorities. Nevertheless, it is to be regretted that a person with Heather Sinclair’s academic background is seemingly unable to find suitable work. I hope she will find a niche for herself amongst schemes, ordinances. appeals-, hearings and the paper war. —

Yours, etc., RICHARD JOHNSON February 22, 1975.
