Less cheese
The Kaikoura Cooperative Dairy Company’s production figures indicate the seriousness of the drought in the district this year. The factory in Mill Road which in 1975 was equipped with the most modern equipment available to mechanise the cheesemaking process, was 10 per cent down on last year’s production up to the end of January, and the manager (Mr R. Gadsbv) estimates that the production for the full year will be. 12 per cent less than the 1700 tonnes of last year. A week ago Mr Gadsby said that the daily production was running about 30 per cent down, and there has been no rain since to improve the situation. Forty-seven dairy farms provide milk for the factory.
