The prophet and the priest

The Wizard and the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. M. L. Underhill) ended up competing for the same audience in Cathedral Square yesterday. The Dean had been standing on a soap-box in th e Cathedral garden, talking to what he described as “a rather small crowd,” when the Wizard arrived with his much bigger throng of lunch-time followers. “I had just got started when he came,” said Dean Underhill. “I was a little frightened that it might have been the end of our little talk, but I must admit that the Wizard was on his best behaviour. “He certainly boosted the crowd, and he gave me 50 per cent of the time.” On reflection. Dean Underhill said he thought there had been “a grain of truth” in most things the Wizard had said. “He says that every religion has to have a priest and a prophet. When the priest gets a bit old and heavy, the prophet comes along with new ideas.”
