Rain unlikely to help
The fire risk in Canterbury forests is critical; and even heavy rain today will be unlikely to reduce the risk significantly. The Forest Service fire protection officer (Mr R. Collier) said yesterday that the forests were at their driest and most dangerous this summer. All logging had been stopped in the forests by noon yesterday. At Bal-
moral forest work had stopped by 9 a.m. The fire-fighting crews were on standby, and manning of the forests had been stepped up, said Mr Collier. The Meteorological Office at Christchurch Airport has predicted a southwesterly change with light rain today but Mr Collier said that there would need
to be at least several inches of rain before there was any easing of the forest fire risk. A maximum temperature of 31deg was recorded at Christchurch Airport yesterday. Public swimming pools in the city had a fairly busy day, and early last evening many families flocked to them.
